NEW YORK — Bruce Arena was not hired as the U.S. men’s national soccer team coach to address long-term player development, forge a distinctive playing style for decades to come or to beat Germany tomorrow. He was hired to replace Jurgen Klinsmann because U.S. soccer was approaching crisis mode after two defeats to start the final round of 2018 World Cup qualifying.
So when the Americans resume qualifiers in March, supporters shouldn’t expect a rush of new players.
“There will be some [changes], but let’s be honest, there aren’t going to be a whole lot of new faces,” Arena said Tuesday during a media roundtable.
