D.C. United’s trip to Kansas City, Mo., ahead of Friday night’s MLS match was supposed to take 2 1/2 hours.
Instead, it turned into a day-night adventure that included an unplanned stop in Chicago, a stay at an O’Hare Airport hotel and a hired charter.
After all the interruptions, United boarded a flight around 11 a.m. Central time Friday and was scheduled to land in Kansas City early in the afternoon.
With the threat of severe late-day storms, the 6 p.m. kickoff against Sporting Kansas City at Children’s Mercy Park was pushed to 8:30 local time (9:30 ET).
