All over the land, from Eugene, Ore., to Foxborough, Mass., international soccer matches are filling stadium dates as part of the annual summer rush by touring teams and high-end tournaments.
From mid-May to early August, almost 100 non-league matches will end up being played in 24 states. Visiting clubs include Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Liverpool. Argentina, Brazil and Chile were here as part of the 16-team Copa America Centenario.
Despite being one of the country’s most fertile soccer markets, however, Washington has been largely left out.
The only international event took place early in the summer window: Peru’s pre-Copa tuneup against El Salvador on May 28 at RFK Stadium.
