Klinsmann talks Messi vs. Maradona, Copa America, card protests, U.S. tactics

HOUSTON– On the eve of the U.S. semifinal against Argentina at sold-out NRG Stadium, Jurgen Klinsmann on Monday was asked about several topics during his pre-training news conference.

Excerpts:

What is your reaction to the tournament disciplinary committee rejecting your protests over Jermaine Jones’s red card and Bobby Wood’s second yellow of the tournament?

“Not surprised. Obviously, we tried it. They don’t see our point that the decision was made while a player was still on the field walking off [when Wood received a card]. We’ll take it the way it is.”

The players seem to be motivated in wanting to prove fans and media wrong …

“They are really motivated, first of all, to themselves to get opportunities to play with the big teams around the world.
